Music conservatories, Dance Theatre Northwest partner for holiday productions Saturday
A Christmas ballet and children's opera will make for a big day of holiday productions Saturday in Coeur d'Alene.
The Music Conservatory of Coeur d’Alene is partnering with two other performance arts organizations to bring the shows to town.
Dance Theatre Northwest will present the famous ballet, "The Nutcracker" by Peter Tchaikovsky, at 3 p.m. in the Schuler Performing Arts Center on the North Idaho College campus. The Music Conservatory will provide live orchestral music conducted by David Brewster before and during the ballet. Its youth choir, directed by Emily Sana, will sing several numbers during the performance.
“We were thrilled to be invited by Andrea Goad, director of Dance Theatre Northwest, to bring 'The Nutcracker' to life, so to speak, with live music and song,” Music Conservatory of Coeur d'Alene Executive Director Cynthia Newkirk said in a Dec. 12 news release. “This timeless holiday classic ballet touches the hearts of so many young children and adults alike and elevates their experience of music in a magical way, with visions of a Christmas fantasy to be enjoyed for a lifetime.”
Tickets for "The Nutcracker" begin at $18. Visit recitalticketing.com/26458 for details.
The Music Conservatory’s second collaborative performance the same afternoon will be with the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint for the one-act children’s and family opera, "Amahl and the Night Visitors."
"This is a fascinating story of the Three Wise Men on their way to bring gifts to the Christ child but are distracted by a poor widow and her crippled son,” said Kent Kimball, artistic director of the Music Conservatory of Coeur d'Alene and conductor of the production. “This opera has been televised in countries around the world and also made into several movies.”
The Coeur d’Alene performance of "Amahl and the Night Visitors" will take place at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 521 E. Lakeside Ave., Coeur d'Alene. Tickets for "Amahl and the Night Visitors" are available at the door by suggested donation of $15 for adults, $10 for students and free for children 12 and younger.
