Feb. 13, 1974 – MISS BROWN WINS AWARDS

Miss Marianne Brown, SHS English teacher who worked the past two summers on the editorial staff of the Sandpoint News-Bulletin, won a first place and three second place awards from the Idaho Press Women’s Association in their annual writing contest. The awards were for articles Miss Brown wrote last summer. Her contest entries included a feature story on the Selkirk Hereford Ranch, a series of three articles on agriculture and a story on the hay crisis in the Sandpoint area. She also entered several articles written for the News-Bulletin’s 1973 Boy Scout Jamboree special edition.

SANDPOINT BOXERS WIN IN BONNERS

Six Sandpoint Boxing Club fighters entered the Inland Empire Novice Golden Gloves championship in Bonners Ferry, with three of them making it to the finals. Jeff McCracken captured the title in the 139-pound division and was presented the outstanding fighter award for boxers over 100 pounds. Kevin Dixon won an easy decision in the 60-pound semi-final bout, and the next night got the nod for the championship. Pat Cove found a fairly easy mark in the 80-pound semi-finals, but lost a close decision in the finals. Sandpoint 85-pounder Shawn Palaniuk gave away three years and four pounds to his Bonners Ferry opponent and lost a close decision in a fight that brought the crowd to its feet. In other action, Russ Morely dropped his match, while Larry Davis fought an exhibition bout.

Feb. 13, 1949 – SHOP ADDS MACHINE

City Shoe and Harness Repair shop at 318 North Second last week completed installation of Landis “400” shoe refinishing machinery, the latest on the market for shoe repair. “This completes our shop,” said shop owner A.R. Rosholt, whose father, E.J. Rosholt, opened the original shop in 1924. “There has been a shoemaker in our family for a good many generations,” Rosholt remarked. “Working with leather just seemed to come naturally to me.” In an effort to better serve his trade, Rosholt has instituted two “farmers’ days,” Saturdays and Mondays, when he gives country trade a preference on rush orders. There are times when several customers in their stocking feet occupy the well-worn but sturdy wooden bench, chatting pleasantly while waiting for their shoes to be repaired.

ERMA BOND WED TO JAMES FERGUSON

St. Joseph’s church was the setting for Saturday’s 10 a.m. marriage of Miss Erma Bond to James E. Ferguson Jr.  Miss Evelyn Ferguson and Bob Ferguson, sister and brother of the groom, were the attendants. Father P.J. Ahern officiated in the presence of immediate relatives of the couple. Miss Greta Knight provided the nuptial music. The bride was lovely in a rose suit with a white orchid corsage. Following the ceremony, a wedding breakfast was served at the Kaniksu, with a beautiful three-tiered wedding cake as the centerpiece.
