TOMCAT SURVIVES NIGHT IN FREEZER
If cats have nine lives, a black tomcat named Lox probably has only eight left. Lox, a pet in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kent McCandless, apparently hopped into an upright freezer at the family home one recent morning when daughter Kim opened the freezer to get some bacon. She said she did not notice Lox enter the box. The next morning, when Kim’s sister Jill opened the freezer, there sat Lox on a shelf with frost on his whiskers. He came out of the box and went about his business, apparently none the worse for his night in a freezer registering 15 below zero. Mr. McCandless, when Jill told him about the cat, hastened to give it an exam but could find nothing wrong. “Apparently he can stand a lot more cold than I thought,” McCandless said.

THAW CUTS POWER SUPPLY
Thursday morning’s sudden thaw caused a power outage in the Sandpoint area for a good share of the day. The stand-by plant was utilized to meet critical needs and the power was rotated from circuit to circuit to take care of critical loads such as schools, hospitals, food locker systems and restaurants, until high line service could be resumed. Merl Ebbe, division manager for Mountain States Power, said the sudden thaw caused moisture to creep into critical places in the substations at Newport and Sandpoint, causing electric arcs to start jumping, in some cases 12 to 15 feet between conductors and ground. Service was restored early in the afternoon.
