Idaho's anti-abortion movement has lost its way

| February 20, 2024 1:00 AM

When Row v. Wade was overturned, I wrote that the anti-abortion movement had to make health care for women and infants universal and free to protect life. Let us see how Idaho’ anti-abortion movement is doing.

Instead of increasing health care, the trigger law is so extreme that neither Bonner nor Boundary County have hospitals that deliver babies anymore. The doctors have fled.

The Idaho Legislature is again trying to get rid of healthcare expansion even though we the voters, overwhelmingly supported it, and it saves the state over 80 million dollars a year.

The anti-abortion movement has lost its way. Not all human life is sacred anymore just the life the Republicans like. Women are presumed guilty and thus too evil and stupid to make their own health choices, choices that protect the mother and her children. Doctors are considered conspirators who don’t care about life but are just there to help evil women.

This toxic stew of hypocrisy is killing people. Across the nation legal abortion is up 0.2% according to the yearly study of health care providers. Women who no longer have the option of a safe pregnancy turn to abortion. Maternal death is up as women lose medical care because doctors leave states that threaten them with prison terms.

If we were anti-abortion, we would get ride of the trigger law and provide women and doctors with the choices they need to support life; sadly, sometimes that choice is abortion.
