Feb. 22, 1974 – DAVIS WINS TOURNEY
Local Sandpoint boxer Larry Davis scored a big win in the Fourth Annual AAU Seattle Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions. Davis, of the Sandpoint Elks Boxing Club, decisioned his 119-pound opponent from Yakima, Ray Kuhnalan, for the important victory.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO WOODFAIRIE?
Many people have called me [Arbutus Hulquist] asking what happened to Woodfairie. This was the name for this [Jewel Lake] area years ago. The fishermen requested that I rename the area for Jewel Lake. The schoolhouse, situated between the Joe Peters and William Harry ranches, is [now] a storage shed belonging to Charles Schneider.

13 ALL STATE MUSICIANS TAPPED
Thirteen SHS student musicians have been selected to participate in the bi-annual All State concert in Boise next month, the highest number in recent memory. The group includes five orchestra members, and four each from the band and chorus. From the orchestra are string players Ira Owens, Kirsten Thompson, Donna Jo Leonard, Rita Smith and John Cruickshank. The singers include Karen Dexter, Naomi Marquez, Jody Wahlgren and Linda Wetzel, and the band members are Eddie Sue Judy, Allison Grorud, Carol Mahler and Roland Greene.

Feb. 22, 1949 – ROADS TURN TO ICE
Just a week after the belated “January thaw” last Wednesday night, the weather turned warm late Tuesday of this week and all day Wednesday the snow melted steadily under impetus of a strong southwest wind and steady rain. Late in the afternoon the rain eased but the wind continued to blow, cutting into the snow which was turning to ice where it was packed in the streets. Roads were so bad that Superintendent Hughes dismissed school until Friday. Sandpoint streets were so slippery that cars found it virtually impossible to turn out of ruts. North of town at the intersection, cars were having a bad time getting up the hill on either 10-A or 95.

UNEMPLOYED LIST LONGEST SINCE 1942
Idaho unemployment is at the greatest point since 1942. Boise tops the list with 2422 men and women listed for jobs. Nampa-Caldwell are next with 1806, Coeur d’Alene has 1499, Lewiston has 1115 and Sandpoint is fifth with 1108. Only a scattering of job openings were reported throughout the state.

Mrs. A.J. Woodfill, instructor at Sandpoint Beauty school, reports enrollment of two new students, Miss Ruth Nelson, route 1, and Miss Eilene Maxfield, city.
Mrs. Carl Bergstrom left Sunday to visit relatives in Pocatello, Santa Monica and San Francisco.
Week end guests at the Stewart Tollbom home were Mrs. Herman Eickerman and son, Gary, of Spokane and her father, Hubert Baumgartner.
