FBCS announces open enrollment

SANDPOINT — With open slots for grades six through 12, Forrest M. Bird Charter School is accepting applications for the 2024-25 school year.

The open enrollment period will last until April 18. If more applications are received than spots available, a lottery will be held April 18 after 3:30 p.m., Mary Jensen, executive director of FBCS, said. Families who are selected will be notified shortly after the lottery date.  

FBCS is a free, public charter school that provides students with a project-based education with a mastery focus to meet their educational goals, FBCS officials said.  

“With class sizes between ten and twenty students, each student has opportunities for individualized instruction to meet their learning needs,” Jensen said. “From STEM projects to the culminating high school senior projects, students explore their educational interests while meeting Idaho state’s grade-level expectations.” 

The school also plans to launch a new program next year that will create opportunities for students to learn from materials that better suit their needs. 

During the 2024-25 school year, FBCS will implement a new sixth- through eighth-grade math system that will place students in either tier one, tier two, or tier three instead of grade-level math. Students will be evaluated and placed in the tier that fits where their math skills are at in order to grow their understanding more quickly and effectively, Jensen said. For example, a middle school student could test into a high school math level. 

“This program developed by our teachers will accelerate students' math learning growth by taking the students where they are and moving them forward,” Jensen said. “I am excited to implement yet another program that will increase learning growth for all of our students.”
