YOUTH SPORTS: Sandpoint Legacy Wrestling captures two team titles at Butte tourneys
BUTTE, Mont. — The Sandpoint Legacy Wrestling Club competed in and won team titles at both the 2024 Cyclops Tournament and the Mining City Middle School Tournament held Feb. 17-18 at Butte Civic Center.
At the Cyclops Tournament, 11 wrestlers came away with medals as Sandpoint Legacy took home the small-team title with 111 total points.
For the girls, Amzie Hatfield (Tot 40) placed third, Clarissa Birch (Midget 60) and Vanessa Hood (Cadet 106/113) fifth for Sandpoint. In the Schoolgirl 105-pound division, Summer Birch clinched an individual title after winning four straight matches.
For the boys, Sandpoint Legacy’s Cole Martin (Novice 112) and Zak Wood (Schoolboy 110) both took home individual titles. Cole and Zak both won all of their matches by pin. Dalton Regehr (Novice 85) and Tyler Wood (Schoolboy 90) placed third, Maxx Watson (Schoolboy 95) and John Holman (Cadet 152) fifth for Sandpoint Legacy.
Kaleb Erickson (Midget 65) did not place, but won two of his four matches by pin. In the Cadet 132-pound division, Gage Martin fought hard but fell in his two back-to-back matches.
At the Mining City Middle School Tournament, which ran simultaneously alongside the Cyclops Tournament, Sandpoint Legacy took home another title, winning the small-team title with 47 points.
Five out of the six wrestlers who competed for Sandpoint Legacy reached the finals in their 16-man brackets. Dalton Regehr (80-84) and Summer Birch (99-106) both won all four of their matches to win their respective weight classes. Maxx Watson (89-95), Zak Wood (105-113) and John Holman (140-150) all went 3-1 and finished second. Tyler Wood (85-92) did not place, but won two of his four matches by pin.
The two tournament’s conclude Sandpoint Legacy’s winter season. The team will kick off their spring schedule with Folkstyle and Freestyle/Greco tournaments in April.
