SANDPOINT — Sandpoint city officials are on the lookout for local artwork to showcase on a piece of playground equipment.

The “we-go-round,” the equipment the art is expected to be displayed on, will be similar to a merry-go-round that is accessible for a variety of ranging abilities.

The project was announced by Heather Upton, the city’s historic preservation officer, at the Feb. 21 council meeting. Format details and a submission deadline of March 11 were included in an announcement released by city officials Monday.

In the next week, city officials plan to issue a “call to art” that will invite artists to submit unique pieces that fit the theme of the Travers Park inclusive playground, where the piece is expected to be installed. The city may give preference to art from illustrators that are local to Bonner County or that have art featured in a local author's book, Upton said.

Since plans for Travers Park already feature themes like Sandpoint stories, Into the Woods and Patrick McManus books, Upton said recruiting local artists for the new playground equipment seemed appropriate. A total of four panels will be needed.

“We would like to see at least one panel with a reference to ADA access, to highlight the new playground being barrier free and ADA accessible,” Upton said.

The city is looking for an artist to submit one independent panel or four panels in story form. The final format will be determined during the selection process, Upton said. The artwork must be original art and AI-generated images are not allowed.

“I’m always happy to see public art in our parks, as it’s accessible, free, and without barriers.” Elle Susnis, chair of the city’s Arts, Culture and Historic Preservation Commission, said. “Which incidentally is the theme of this special new playground, designed for all abilities to enjoy. It’s wonderful to have the city supporting our local artists with a project like this.”

Further details, instructions, and guidelines for set up of the digital art will be featured in the call for art posting, which will be posted on the city of Sandpoint’s website and on the city’s Facebook page.
