Jan. 7, 1974 – HACKWORTH RETIRES

Dec. 31 was Ken Hackworth’s last day as city clerk. He began the job in 1956 after moving here from Hollywood, Calif. His pay at the time was $300 a month. “Actually, I had two jobs then,” Hackworth said, “Besides city clerk, I was also the police judge. I handled all the traffic and city ordinance violations.” The police judge job did not last long, but in 1969 Ken got a new title to go along with city clerk, that of administrative assistant and purchasing agent for the city. “I was already acting in those capacities, but they made it official,” he said. Ken and his wife hoped to travel in their mobile home after he retired, “but with the gas shortage, I don’t know now.”
