COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Lee runs to No. 8 all-time finish in 60 hurdles for EWU

Rusty Lee, Eastern Washington University Track & Field

Lee finished third in the 60 meter hurdles at the 2024 Spokane Indoor Challenge held at The Podium in Spokane Jan. 12-13. The 2023 Sandpoint graduate ran a new personal best mark of 8.46 seconds and defeated Josh Boast and Aiden Wise of Central Washington in the finals after falling to both athletes in the preliminaries. Lee’s time of 8.46 seconds puts him at eighth all-time in EWU record books. Eastern Washington, along with many other schools that have Bonner/Boundary County track and field athletes, will compete at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial hosted by the University of Idaho Jan. 19-20. The meet will be streamed live on ESPN+.

Teagun Holycross, Montana University Track & Field

Priest River’s Teagun Holycross finished third out of 23 runners in the 60 meter dash, and third out of 21 runners in the 200 meter dash at the 2024 Spokane Indoor Challenge held at The Podium in Spokane Jan. 12-13. Holycross ran a time of 6.87 seconds in the 60 and 21.75 seconds in the 200, both of those times are near his personal bests. The Griz will also compete at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial this Friday and Saturday. 

Hannah Davidson, Utah State Track & Field

Sandpoint’s Hannah Davidson picked up her first event win of the season in the mile at the Snake River Open held at Idaho State’s Holt Arena Jan. 11-12. Davidson posted a time of 4:59.07, her second best finish of all-time, and the best out of 13 runners last week. Utah State returns to action Jan. 19-20 at the Weber State Invite.

Baseball season beginning soon

Priest River’s Jantzen Lucas will begin his junior campaign with Lewis-Clark State College who was just ranked the No. 3 team in the nation according to the pre-season NAIA Coaches poll conducted in mid-november. LCSC will start their season off in Mesa, Ariz., at the East/West Challenge where the Warriors will face No. 6 Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday, Feb. 1 and No. 1 Southeastern (Florida) and No. 7 Bellevue (Nebraska) on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Sandpoint’s Cody Newhart is set to play for Lackawanna College (Scranton, Pa.) this spring. The Falcons, who were 40-17 (tied for second-most wins in program history) last year, won multiple games at the NJCAA World Series for the first-time in program history. Lackawanna begins their season Saturday, Feb. 10 against Bryant & Stratton College in Virginia Beach, Va.

Sandpoint’s Austin Dillon and Kody MacDonald are set to play for Yakima Valley this spring. The Yak’s season will begin Saturday, Feb. 17 against Everett. Dillon, a right-handed pitcher, recently clocked an 89 mph fastball during a winter bullpen session.

Sandpoint’s Colin Roos will officially begin playing for the University of Utah on Saturday, Feb. 17 when the Utes take on California Baptist.

Sandpoint’s Jack Zimmerman will officially begin playing for Lassen College on Friday, Jan. 26 when the Cougars face off against Hartnell. Lassen is playing preseason ball already with a matches against Folsom Lake yesterday and today.
