Jan. 23, 1974 – SHORT GROWING SEASON
1973’s frost-free period here was only 83 days, way short of the normal 120 days. May 27 was the last frost of spring; the first frost of fall was Aug. 18.

GROCERS OKAYED FOR FOOD STAMPS
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that all known retail grocers in Bonner County have been authorized to participate in the Food Stamp Program, which opens in the county February.

ROSE MAXWELL IS PRESIDENT
New officers were installed at the January meeting of Woman’s Relief Corps, held in the IWA hall: Rose Maxwell, president; Rheuama Varney, senior vice president; Mary Holbert, junior vice president; Melba Montgomery, chaplain; Nellie Perin, conductress; Effie Strecker, guard; Helen Grinolds, treasurer; Elsie Temple, musician; Mabel Selberg, assistant conductress; Gilda Forgey, assistant guard; Myrtle Putnam, patriotic instructor; Helen Grinolds, press correspondent; Mary Perry, Grace Parson, Louise Parker and Susie Montague, color bearers.

ALPINE OPENS NEW CAR LOT
The co-owners of Alpine Motor Company, Ron Shaffer and Tom Robideaux, announce the opening of the Alpine Motors Annex, a new car lot on the Dover Highway near the Northern Lights building. In December, they acquired the former Hank’s Drive-In property, enabling them to augment their display of 1974 models, used cars, campers and trailers.

Jan. 23, 1949 – TWO HOME GAMES!
Sandpoint high school’s Bulldogs, now in second place in class A conference standing, will have two home [basketball] games this week end. Friday the Bulldogs meet Mullan, while Saturday night, Wallace plays here. The team includes seniors Jack Rogers, Jim Bell, Garnet Reynolds and Bob Moore; juniors Walt Hardin, Don Scott, Delbert Sheffler and Jerry Miller; and sophomores George Eidam, John Lowary and Pat Kaufman. Manager is Jack Parker; Jimmy Van Sant is assistant manager. Coach is Cotton Barlow; Dennis Racicot is assistant coach.

BYE NAMES RED CROSS WORKERS
Admiral Harold Bye, local Red Cross chapter chairman, appointed Mrs. Lee Merwin as publicity chairman for the Red Cross fund raising campaign. She will be assisted by Mrs. Bud Hadley. Mrs. Dollie Lord is chairman for Laclede, Mrs. Homer Robinson for Wrencoe, and Harold John for the West Pine area. Chairmanships in other areas are pending. The Knights of Columbus volunteered to “gather up the tag ends” in small and hard to reach districts.

NEWS FROM COLBURN
Jim Henry joined the navy and leaves next week.
Lyle Evans came from Ephrata to spend a week with relatives. Mrs. Evans has been here two weeks visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Timblin.
