File Idaho income tax returns starting Jan. 29

Taxpayers can begin filing their Idaho tax returns as soon as Monday, Jan. 29.

Idaho State Tax Commission will start processing 2023 Idaho individual income tax returns on that date. The Internal Revenue Service also begins processing federal returns on that date.

The sooner taxpayers file returns, the sooner they will get their refunds, officials said. In 2023, ITC processed over 1 million individual income tax returns; it expects to process over 1.03 million in 2024.

Tax season facts:

• E-filing returns is the safest and easiest way to file, officials said. It’s also the quickest way to receive a refund. Using direct deposit gets refunds to taxpayers even faster.

• All Idaho tax returns go through fraud-detection reviews and accuracy checks. Before issuing refunds, tax commission officials said they may send taxpayers a letter to verify their identity or to ask for more information.

The deadline to file 2023 income taxes is Monday, April 15.
