Humphrey leads Priest River to victory over Newport

NEWPORT — Priest River started the game off on a 16-2 run, and then the second half on a 12-0 run, in their huge victory over Newport at the annual Border Battle spirit competition held at Newport High.
Leading both of those runs was Desi Humphrey, who scored a game-high 21 points and also added five rebounds and three assists. Helena White (11) and Pavin Coleman (10) also reached double-figures for the Spartans. Coleman also had a game-high eight assists.
Newport’s Emma Crabtree led the Grizzlies with 10 points.

KELLOGG — Helena White posted 10 points, eight rebounds, and two steals as the Spartans fell to the Wildcats in 2A Central Idaho League play at Kellogg High.
Desi Humphrey added five points, three assists, and two steals. Lizzie McCracken had six points, all of which came from behind the three-point line. Pavin Coleman recorded a team-high three steals.
Macy Jerome led Kellogg with 23 points, five rebounds, and five steals.

McCracken, Pound give Spartans extra boost in win over Lumberjacks

ST. MARIES — Priest River limited St. Maries to just eight points in the second half in their 2A Central Idaho League victory over the Lumberjacks.
“They went into a zone in the second half, and we just did not react real well to it, didn’t move the ball well,” St. Maries coach Gary Krumheuer said.
Desi Humphrey hit two 3-pointers and scored eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter for Priest River. Also adding nine points each were Lizzie McCracken and Pavin Coleman.
Brenna Elliott had 11 points, Averie Baird 14 rebounds for St. Maries.
Priest River (9-6, 2-4) faces St. Maries at home on Thursday.

Mathews leads Spartans in loss at Border Battle

NEWPORT — Sophomore Lucas Mathews scored a team-high 16 points as the Spartans fell to Newport at the annual Border Battle spirit competition held at Newport High.
In addition to his 16 points, Mathews also had three assists and three steals. Carter Cook, Brock Kreager, and Sawyer Staudt all had nine points each. Ian Lamanna dished out a team-high four assists.
Newport’s Berg Hughes led the way for the Grizzlies with 18 points and seven rebounds. Bubba Kinney added 17 points, four steals, and three assists. Austin Owen had eight points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Staudt drops 22 in loss to Wildcats

KELLOGG — Junior Sawyer Staudt scored 22 points as the Spartans fell just five points short of Kellogg in a back-and-forth 2A Central Idaho League match at Kellogg High.
Priest River’s Lucas Mathews stuffed the stat sheet, recording seven points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals. In addition to his 22 points, Staudt also grabbed four rebounds and nabbed three steals.
For Kellogg, Blake Coburn led the way with 17 points, three assists and four steals. Draeden Taylor added 14 points, five rebounds, and three steals for the Wildcats.
Priest River (3-11, 1-5) will travel to Genesis Prep Thursday.

Priest River wins five duals at Clearwater Valley
KOOSKIA — Priest River won five out of their nine duals at the Clearwater Valley North/South Duals held this past weekend at Clearwater Valley High.
The Spartans defeated Nampa Christian (39-38), Lakeside (58-30), Salmon (72-6), North Gem (60-20), and Melba (58-30).
Priest River will head to Bonners Ferry High for the Conrad Garner Duals Feb. 2-3. The results of Tuesday’s dual meet against Moscow will be in Thursday’s paper.
