YOUTH SPORTS: Sandpoint Albion SC wins U12 championship at Kootenay Rovers Classic
Sandpoint Albion SC’S U12 academy team defeated four different Canadian soccer teams by a 22-1 goal differential to win the Kootenay Rovers Classic held June 21-23 at Moir Park in Cranbrook, British Columbia.
Albion recently rostered some new players, all of whom made contributions in the team’s four victories.
"We were surprised with the seamless integration of our six new players,” coach Jennings Waterhouse said. “They were eager to contribute and embraced the patient and possession style of play we chose to implement over the weekend."
Albion defeated Fernie United (British Columbia) 6-0, the Cranbrook-based Kootenay East Rovers (British Columbia) 4-1, the Nelson Selects (British Columbia) 6-0, and the Kootenay East Rovers 5-0 in the championship match. In the championship match, Albion scored all five of their goals in the first half after just 10 shots on goal.
"The boys embraced the challenge we presented, of creating one-vs-one’s and encouraging our stellar athletes to take risks and be confident and aggressive,” coach Waterhouse said. “The first halves were full of scoring, and in the second halves, we held around 75% of possession. The sportsmanship of all players was notable.”
