Luana (VanderSloot) Hiebert was born Feb. 6, 1941, to Margaret and Peter Francis VanderSloot in Spokane, Wash. She passed away July 13, 2024, in Spokane Valley, Wash.

Luana graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1959, and went on to Bethel College in Kansas where her roommate introduced her to her future husband. Luana married her lifelong love, Wilbur L. Hiebert, on June 18, 1961, in North Newton, Kan. Later in life she returned to college and earned her bachelor’s degree in social work from Idaho State University, and used that education in the benefit of her North Idaho community as a social worker for several years. She was called a “farmer extraordinaire” by her family and enjoyed gardening and baking. She would make wedding cakes that were intricately decorated for her friends and family to bless their birthdays, weddings, holidays, and other special events.

Through the course of her life, Luana, was a resident in Cocolalla, Idaho, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Spokane and Spokane Valley, Wash. She was a longstanding member of New Song Bible Church in Sagle, Idaho, where she enjoyed serving and singing her favorite hymns.

She is survived by her husband, Wilbur L. Hiebert; sons Jonathan and Daniel Hiebert of Spokane; daughter “Maegan” Juanita Erb of Lake Tapps, Wash.; brother Frank VanderSloot of Idaho Falls, Idaho; sister Marguerite (VanderSloot) Johnson of Sandpoint, Idaho; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her mother, Margaret, and father, Peter Francis; as well as her brother, Peter VanderSloot.

A service will be held Aug. 11, 2024, at 1 p.m. at the Coeur d’Alene Shrine Club, 1250 W. Lancaster in Hayden, Idaho. Please share your memories of Luana on her tribute wall at hennesseyvalley.com.
