Joanne Kelly, 87

Joanne Pennington Kelly, a beloved resident of Berkeley, passed away peacefully May 27, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Sandpoint, Idaho, on March 8, 1937, to Charles and Dora Pennington.

Joanne pursued her education at Whitman College and the University of Idaho, where she pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma. On June 14, 1958, she married her high school sweetheart, Paul Kelly. Together, they embarked on a journey that took them to Berkeley, Calif., where they raised their four boys.

Throughout her life, Joanne was deeply committed to serving her community. She was a devoted member of PEO and dedicated many years to volunteering with the Alameda County Mental Health Association, offering her support and compassion to those in need. Joanne's impact extended to the cultural sphere as well. She served as an active board member for the Festival at Sandpoint for several decades.

In her leisure time, Joanne found joy in music and social gatherings and travel. She had a talent for playing the piano and cherished the moments spent entertaining her loved ones. Joanne and Paul traveled to 30 countries over their lifetime together.

Joanne is survived by her four sons, Mark, David (Alison), Eric, and Chris (Carol), along with her nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and her sister, Esther Inselman. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul Kelly, and her sister, Charlotte Telgener, and brother Doug Pennington.

Joanne Pennington Kelly will be remembered for her unwavering love, kindness, and dedication to others. Her legacy of compassion and generosity will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.

A celebration of Joanne's life will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sandpoint on Saturday, June 8 at 11 a.m., followed by a reception in the parish hall.
