June 13, 1974 – IRIS GARDENS TO OPEN
Hilltop Iris Gardens, located above Pinecrest Cemetery, will be open to the public beginning Sunday. Mrs. True [Geneva] Wilson invites all those interested to visit during the blooming season.

TOP ATHLETES PICKED FOR SJHS AWARDS
Two junior high ninth graders, Mark Hoekema and Pam Bradetich, were honored as recipients of the school’s newest athletic prize – The Preston Mikesell Athletic Award. SJHS coach Steve Jones made the official presentation. “This is the first year for the award,” he said. “It honors the best all-round girl and boy athletes. The student athletes met as a body to vote for those they felt best filled the requirements: ability, attitude, contribution to the team, desire, sportsmanship, scholarship, and citizenship.” To be eligible, students had to compete in at least two sports during the school year.

FAST PITCH SOFTBALL FOR GIRLS
A fast-pitch softball league for Bonner County girls ages 11-14 has materialized. Mrs. Dee Boeck is the commissioner of the new league of the Bonner County Youth Athletic Assn. The league has five teams. “If things go well this year, we’ll expand the program next year,” said Mrs. Boeck. The teams which will begin play July 1 include the “Southside Streakers” (let’s hope they don’t); Sagle; Town Team 1, “Mr. Hits;” Town Team 2, “Stealing Streakers;” and Town Team 3, “Raunchy Ripoffs.”

COLLEGE GIRLS RUN BEACH CONCESSION
Miss Patsy Patton and Miss Colleen Ebbe opened their lunch counter at city beach Wednesday and will serve hamburgers, hot dogs and light lunches, besides pop and candies. They plan to be open during the noon hour to accommodate office and store workers who might like a quick dip and lunch at noon time. The girls will keep the concession open as late in the evening as trade warrants.

PFC. BRIXEN WINS BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Brixen learned Wednesday that their son, Pfc. Gene Brixen, who is stationed at Ladd AFB, Fairbanks, Alaska, won the heavyweight boxing championship for the Alaskan theater at Anchorage. Under Karl Berg, Brixen became interested in boxing while still in school here, developing an excellent technique which has steadily improved.

HARDIN AT BOYS’ STATE
Walt Hardin, Sandpoint, is one of the councilmen elected to help operate the government at the annual Idaho Boys’ state at Boise.
