Turtles on the move in region

| June 16, 2024 1:00 AM

Just like other summer travelers, turtles are on the move. I was crossing over the Pack River bridge on Highway 200 recently when I spotted a dark spot on the road. Turtles can look like rocks on the road. I have seen multiple turtles attempt to cross the road here; some have made it to their destination, however many have not. I always have my eyes peeled for them in this area.

I feel happy if I see one that is still alive. The little guy this morning was crawling across the road. If I see they're alive I promptly get to a safe spot and grab them mid-crawl. If you spot a turtle on the road and can safely help them, here is how you handle these little western painted turtles. You can carry them by their shell by holding them with both hands on the edges in the middle where their tiny claws can’t reach you. If you can tell which direction it is traveling, you can carry it toward that side of the road well away from traffic.

There used to be a turtle crossing sign in this section of Highway 200 to make drivers aware, but on two occasions the signs were stolen.

Keep an eye out for turtles!

Thank you!
