Little clutch in win over CDA

SANDPOINT — Mason Little was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, an RBI and two runs scored as the 19U North Idaho Lakers held off the 17U CDA Lumberman for a 4-2 win at War Memorial Field on Wednesday night.

The Lakers struck early with two runs in the first inning thanks to an RBI groundout from Sage Medeiros and an RBI single from Finn Mellander. In the second, Little, in addition to his double and triple on the day, hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field to score Jacob Hansen, who singled to lead off the inning. After giving up two runs in the top half of the fourth, Soren Caprio responded for the Lakers in the bottom half with an RBI single to right field to give the Lakers a 4-2 advantage.

On the mound, Medeiros went four innings, giving up just three hits, two earned runs and no walks while striking out five batters. In relief, Dallen Williams threw three no-hit innings, giving up just one walk and striking out six batters.

Lakers take down two Calgary teams at Battle at the Beach

SANDPOINT — Alex Leverich pitched a 1-run complete game and three other pitchers were stellar as the North Idaho Lakers defeated the Calgary Premier Blues 16U, 7-1, and the Changeup Baseball Academy 18U (Calgary), 2-1 at the Battle at the Beach Tournament held June 14-16 at War Memorial Field.

Against the Blues, the Lakers scored three runs in the second inning and four in the fifth to take home the victory. In the second, Gavin Day had an RBI bunt single and North Idaho scored the other two runs on a walk and a groundout. In the fifth, Little and Mellander both hit RBI singles, Williams a sacrifice fly, to seal the deal. On the bump, Leverich was electric, throwing seven innings and giving up just four hits, one run, four walks and striking out two batters for the win.

In the 2-1 win over the Changeup Baseball Academy out of Calgary, Alberta, Mellander stole home after a wild pitch to walk-off the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Lakers’ only other run came in the first inning when Williams hit an RBI single to left field. Williams was also efficient on the mound, striking out five batters and giving up just one hit over 3 ⅓ innings. Parker Reichart and Little also pitched well in relief; Little threw two no-hit innings to close things out.

Against Chewelah, who ended up winning the entire tournament, North Idaho scored all three runs in the bottom of the first in a 8-3 loss to the 49ers. It was Finn Mellander who had all three RBIs after hitting a bases-clearing double to deep left field, scoring Greysen Johnson, Caprio and Little. Recent Clark Fork High graduate Cole Sanroman got the call on the mound and pitched a solid three innings, giving up three hits, two earned runs and three walks while striking out five batters.

In the final game on Sunday, CDA would get revenge as the Lakers fell 6-2 to the Lumbermen. North Idaho scored both of their runs in the first inning, getting an RBI double from Williams and an RBI single from Cole Sanroman. Little and Caprio both had two hits in the contest. Despite a good game on the mound, Tyler was credited with loss after going five innings, giving up seven hits, one earned run and three walks while striking out five batters.

The 19U North Idaho Lakers (6-3) will face Prairie Tuesday at home.
