June 20, 1974 – COUNTY GETS ENGINEER
Louis Vermeer, 37, officially became the county engineer Monday with a starting salary of $15,000 a year. He immediately got together with Bill Powers, county planner, to discuss a county building code.

KOOTENAI EIGHTH GRADE GRADUATES
Kootenai School graduated 26 students on June 4: Kimberly Barfuss, Susan Hepinstall, Terri Thom, Anita Sivula, Candice Kemp, Juanita White, Kelly Gardner, Kathy Peterson, Pamela Offermann, Glen Millin, Latrice Dooley, Cari Bloom, Wendy Cornella, Jaculyn Woodland, David Hamann, Robert Kohal, Robert Hill, Ricky Hart, John Marks, Robert Stutzke, Kelly Ribail, Dwight Hepinstall, Robert Buechner, Shawn Rucker, Jeffrey Sater, William Hoffman, and Glen Millin. The school principal is Leo Johnson.

WARM TEMPS CAUSE RIVERS TO FLOOD
Temperatures in the 90s last weekend and so far this week sent streams and rivers flowing into Lake Pend Oreille to peak stages. With continued high temperatures, the U.S. Corps of Army Engineers predict the lake will peak between 2064 and 2065 by tomorrow or Saturday. Pack River was running over its banks near the SH 200 bridge Tuesday; Trestle Creek was running high and dirty; Lightning Creek was at peak flow; the Clark Fork River was pouring in turbid flow and considerable driftwood despite a boom that diverts most of it. The lake’s surface is dotted with driftwood, making navigation hazardous.

June 20, 1949 – MRS. O’LEARY GETS 25
Mrs. Anna O’Leary, 76-year-old fisherwoman, 609 N. Fourth avenue, went fishing out of Talache with Mr. and Mrs. Gene Blair, Sandpoint. She accounted for 25 fish out of the boat’s total haul of 91 bluebacks and 1 cutthroat, but had the dyed-in-the-wool angler’s explanation: “If I hadn’t run out of angleworms, I’d really have caught some fish.”

REWARD FOR SCOUT WORK!
Dr. C.C. Wendle, who has served the past year as chairman of Kaniksu council of the Boy Scout organization, last Saturday in Spokane received the Silver Beaver award. Dr. Wendle has had more than 18 years in scouting and was one of three Inland Empire scouters to receive the Silver Beaver award.

NEWS FROM TRESTLE CREEK
The blueback fishing is fine. Everybody brings them in. The lake is still too dirty for the big ones. As soon as it clears, we can anticipate good fishing.
Merl Ebbe of Sandpoint took out Mrs. Ebbe and they had a good catch of silvers.
Doc Workman landed 27 silvers between 6 and 8 a.m., then put on a cutthroat rig; not doing well, he changed back to silver rig and brought in a lot more.
Mr. Porath of Kootenai rowed the boat for his two boys and despite the rough water, got a pailful.
It is surprising how many of our visitors are interested in lake property.
