No parking implemented on Sunnyside Road

SANDPOINT — New “no parking” signs have been placed along the shoreline of Sunnyside Road following an influx of drivers parking their vehicles in the street to access shoreline along the right of way.

Bonner County Road and Bridge director Jason Topp said the signs have been placed along the stretch of roadway that goes around a corner with limited sight visibility.

“This area of no parking is on the west side of the road for approximately 950 feet,” Topp said. “The people have been parking on the road and blocking the driving lanes, which has become quite dangerous with the limited visibility on the corner and the increase in traffic on the road.”

Additionally, Topp said a lot of heavy equipment and large trucks are frequenting the road as it is currently under construction. Multiple vehicles being parked on the road causes concern for the safety of the public as well as the crews working to repair the road, he said.

Those who continue to park on the road, ignoring the “no parking” signs, could be cited. While there is not a large amount of legal parking, Topp encouraged users to park there, and if there are no open spots, to find another beach elsewhere to enjoy.

He also added that the stretch of shoreline the public has been using is private property, but the owner has been courteous enough to allow public use.

“Folks have an area on the east side of the road that they can park,” Topp said. “It is off of the travel way portion of the road. I would encourage folks to use the parking area off the roadway as the folks that own the property have been very nice to allow the public to use their beach.”
