EMIDA — The Idaho State Police is investigating a shooting incident that left a man dead at a residence in Emida on Monday.

Benewah County Sheriff's Office deputies were at a residence in the 60 block of South Station Road to arrest a 33-year-old man for a felony probation violation warrant, a press release said.

After contacting a female resident, the deputies entered the home. As deputies approached a bedroom, a shot was fired from within the room.

"A deputy near the bedroom believed he was being shot at and fired one round," the release said.

Based on the preliminary investigation, it is believed the male died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was not struck by the deputy's bullet, the release said.

As gunfire is considered a use of force by law enforcement, the Benewah County Sheriff's Office requested ISP conduct the investigation.

"The Benewah County Coroner's Office has taken custody of the deceased and will release his identity, as well as determine the official cause and manner of his death," the release said.
