Joan Barbara (Prendergast) Head, 89

Joan B. (Prendergast) Head, 89, of Kellogg, Idaho, passed away March 1, 2024, at Silverton of Cascadia. Born on  May 22, 1934, in Wallace, Idaho; Joan was the daughter of Frank T. and Lila (Ryckman) Prendergast.

Joan graduated from Kellogg High School in 1952, and in later years she delighted in the many class reunions her class held. Joan also graduated from the University of Idaho with a bachelor’s degree in education.

Joan began her teaching career in the Silver Valley, teaching at the Pinehurst Elementary and then the Kellogg Junior High School in the subjects of English and Social Studies. She later taught in Hooper, Wash., St. Maries, Idaho, and finally in Sandpoint. Joan also became a media specialist/librarian for Sandpoint Middle School and a driver’s education instructor.

Joan first married Preston E. Mikesell on Dec. 18, 1954, in Kellogg. Preston preceded her in death March 19, 1973, in a motorcycle accident. She later married William F. Head on June 26, 1981, in Sandpoint. He preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 1988.

Joan was always active in her education career and her community. She served as president of the Bonner County Education Association four times. After retirement, she moved back to the Silver Valley and served on the Shoshone Medical Center Trustees Board for many years, as well as the Shoshone Medical Center Foundation board. Joan also served on the Kellogg City Council for several years.

Joan is survived by two daughters, Debbie Mikesell (Ross Stout) of Osburn, Idaho; and Katherine Kilduff (Ben Kilduff) of Gresham, Ore.; one grandson, Nathan Baldwin of Kellogg, Idaho; and two great-grandsons; two nephews, Tom Benson (Vicky Benson) of Smelterville, Idaho, and Eric Benson (Andrea Benson) of Spokane Valley, Wash. Joan was preceded in death by her two husbands; one daughter, Prendy Schneider; one sister, Peny Benson; and her parents, Frank and Lila Prendergast.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 8, 2024, at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel of Kellogg at 11 a.m.. with Pastor Art Fleming officiating. A reception will be held following services at the Chapel.
