Joel A. Sargent, 84

Born September 14, 1939, in Baltimore, Md., to Cdr. Harold and Jane Sargent. Joel lived in Maryland, Ohio, and California where he earned a BS at Berkeley in 1962. He joined the Navy in 1962. He married his first wife, Carol Altermatt, on June 1962. He had two children from this marriage: Greg J. Sargent and Jeanne H. Sargent. 

He served several tours of duty, including: USS Benner as weapons officer; USS Repose as operations officer and the senior watch officer; Chattanooga Tennessee as commanding officer. He attended post graduate school, where he obtained his MS degree in computer science; Washington, D.C., working for Bureau of Naval Personnel; USN MCRC, Spokane, Wash., as base commander of the Naval and Marine Corps Center; New Orleans, La., as deputy director of Computer Operations; Korea as alternate manager of Wartime Operations for the entire Western Pacific. Here he earned his MBA from the University of Oklahoma. From Korea he was flown stateside twice a month to brief the White House on space and wartime operations; Chief of Staff for the Reserve Region in San Francisco. At this point Joel retired from the Navy after more than 20 years of distinguished service and joined IBM and Lockheed Martin as manager of Classified Computer Engineering Operations.

He remarried Carol Lynn Carter of Sandpoint, Idaho, in 1978 where they were happily married for 32 years until her death in 2010. On September 1, 2011, he married Kathryn Ann Anderson of Sandpoint where they resided until his passing March 11, 2024.

His hobby was sailing, and he owned numerous sailboats. He also enjoyed fly fishing. 

He was loved by everyone who ever met him. He will be greatly missed.
