PREP LACROSSE: Sandpoint girls shutout Mead for third straight win
SANDPOINT — Throughout the Washington Girls Lacrosse League, 87 matches have been played so far this season. Sandpoint, thanks to stellar defense and great play from Eva Sloan in goal, notched the league’s first shutout after defeating Mead 14-0 at War Memorial Field on Tuesday.
Sloan had three total saves, a couple of which were direct shots, as Sandpoint took care of the Big Cats rather handily. Sandpoint's Cassidy Aitken led the Bulldogs with five goals while Rowan Davis added four of her own. Tess Sloan and Kayla Beers also had two each.
The Bulldogs dominated at draw which helped them to gain and keep possession of the ball — something they did for the majority of the game. Sandpoint also had a lot of caused turnovers, six of which came from Grace Gavin. Terra Bode and Maddie Mitchell also both caused three turnovers each.
Head coach Nancy Dooley said the girls were passing the ball well throughout the whole night, and it definitely showed, as the Bulldogs assisted on half of their goals.
“The theme of the night for us was — support your teammates,” Dooley said. “We talked before the game about how being a part of a team is like a tight-knit community and family and that we need to mark the big occasions that are hard and not so fun, but also mark the celebratory ones. We talked about how our team is resilient … All of these girls possess that trait, not only in lacrosse, but in life. They showed that tonight.”
Sandpoint (3-0) returns to action Thursday, April 10, when they host the toughest opponent in Washington’s Eastern Division, the Spokane Stealth (4-1).
