Abbey hosting Sharing the Dharma Day event
Sravasti Abbey, the Buddhist monastery near Newport, opens its doors Sunday, May 12, for its monthly Sharing the Dharma Day. The event will take place from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
With the event being held on Mother’s Day, abbey officials said they especially welcome families to explore compassion and share in community fellowship. All are welcome. This month’s theme is “Compassion and Living Ethically.” Registration and a COVID rapid test are required.
Sharing the Dharma Day activities include a guided meditation, a talk on the topic by Sravasti Abbey founder Venerable Thubten Chodron, a vegetarian potluck lunch, and a facilitated discussion. Topics are drawn from the book, "An Open-hearted Life: Transformative Methods for Compassionate Living," by Chodron and Eastern Washington University psychologist Russell Kolts. The program is offered freely, and donations as well as food offerings are welcomed. Those bringing food are asked not to include meat, onion, garlic, or leeks in the potluck offering.
A Buddhist monastery in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Sravasti Abbey is home to both monks and nuns. It is among the first training monasteries for English-speaking practitioners in the U.S. Sravasti Abbey is located at 692 Country Lane, Newport.
