4A DISTRICT 1-2 SOFTBALL: Sandpoint’s season ends with loss to Lakeland

MOSCOW — Teagan Newsom had an RBI double and five other Bulldogs notched hits as Sandpoint fell to Lakeland 12-1 in a loser-out 4A Inland Empire League district tournament game at Moscow High on Tuesday.

It was a 3-1 game until the fifth inning, when the Hawks put up nine runs to take the victory.

“Our bats were just not alive as they were on Saturday,” head coach Leah Platt said. “Hali Smotherman did well on the mound — it really could have gone either way up until the fifth when their hitters got on with their timing.”

Platt noted that throughout the game, Bailey Lancaster was a constant wall behind the plate, and that Peyton Cessna, Abi Miller and Newsom came up with some big plays on the defensive side of things.

“I am so very proud of all these young ladies,” Platt said. “They battled and fought all season and showed grit and determination. I hope we can build on all the positives from this year and bring them into next season. We will miss our seniors, Kaylee McCown and Peyton Cessna.”

Sandpoint finished the season 3-22 with two wins over Priest River, one over Bonners Ferry.
