1A DISTRICT 1-2 TRACK & FIELD: Four Wampus Cats headed to state championship

LAPWAI — Clark Fork’s Westin Caven, Wyatt Mintken, Dillon Ryan-Downing, and Olivia Yetter all placed amongst the top five in their respective events, punching their tickets to the state meet, at the 1A District 1-2 Track & Field Championships held at Lapwai High on Friday and Saturday.

In the high jump, Caven, a sophomore, soared to a new personal best, clearing five feet and inches to place fourth. In the 100, Minkten, a senior, grabbed the last qualifying spot after posting a time of 11.84 seconds; he set a new personal best of 11.80 seconds in the preliminary round Friday. In the 200, Ryan-Downing placed fourth after running a time of 23.87 seconds. The senior avenged himself after placing seventh in the 100 earlier in the day. Junior standout hurdler Olivia Yetter was the Wampus Cats’ highest finisher, placing third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.74 seconds, her second-best time all-time.

Barely missing the cut was Arrow Christofferson, who placed seventh in the discus with a new personal best throw of 114 feet and 10 inches — a six foot improvement. Minkten was sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 39 feet and one inch, 1 ½ inches behind fifth place. Yetter was seventh in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 52.25 seconds.

Clark Fork’s boys placed eighth out of 18 teams with 30 total points. Clark Fork’s girls were 14th out of 16 teams with 11 points.

The Wampus Cats will head to the 1A IHSAA Track & Field Championships set to be held May 17-18 at Middleton High.
