PREP TENNIS: Sandpoint boys, girls cruise to district titles

4A DISTRICT 1-2 TENNIS

MOSCOW — Sandpoint’s Pepper Rickert, Jacob Dawson, and dynamic duo Sydney Webb and Aubrey Knowles all won their respective championships, leading both Sandpoint’s boys and girls to 4A Inland Empire League district titles at Moscow on Saturday.

In girls singles, Rickert, who rolled through the tournament without losing a game, defeated fellow Bulldog Neva Reseska in straight sets to win the girls singles title. Reseska, a two-time district champion, rebounded after the championship match loss to take second after winning the backdraw.

Dawson, in boys singles, prevailed without losing a single set to earn his second consecutive district crown. Webb and Knowles, in girls doubles, put on a dominant performance en route to their title. Head coach Kent Anderson said they played with passion and were focused throughout the tournament.

In boys doubles, Ethan Ballard and Nathan Duke lost a tough third-set tiebreaker in the finals, but came back to beat Moscow in the second-place match to earn their first trip to state. Even more impressive, Ballard fought through a shoulder injury the whole tournament in order to get the job done.

Brennan Johnson and Ellie Tutin will also be making their first state appearance in mixed doubles after defeating teammates Noah Spinney and Berkeley Cox in the second-place match.

“Both mixed doubles teams played strong and determined,” Anderson said. “I’m proud of both of our mixed teams.”

The 4A state tournament is next Friday and Saturday at the Appleton Tennis Complex in Boise.

Three Wampus Cat duos headed to state tourney

COEUR d’ALENE — Eloise Shelton and Chase Sanroman (mixed doubles), Aurora Lane and Priscills Mayorga (girls doubles), and Piper Scarlett and Amie Matteson (girls doubles) are all headed to the state tournament after great showings at the 3A District 1-2 Championships held at Lake City and Coeur d’Alene High on Saturday.

“It’s quite an accomplishment for first-year players,” head coach Jeff Emmer said. “There were a lot of very close matches, and many were decided by a super-tiebreaker. They prevailed through it all. I'm so very proud of each of them.”

The 3A state tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at Ridgevue High.
