4A TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP

MERIDIAN — Ivy Smith won her second straight title in the shot put, setting a new 4A state meet record, and Klein Fragoso took home the state pole vault title to lead the Bulldogs after the first day of action at the 4A Track & Field State Championships, which are being held at Mountain View High.

Smith didn’t just smash the Sandpoint High girls shot put record for the third time this year, her throw of 44 feet and 7 inches was over 7 feet further than this year’s runner-up. Smith broke the 4A state meet record by just under four inches — the previous record was held by Jacob Luteyn of Bishop Kelly, who threw 44 feet and 3 ¼ inches back in 2022.

In the boys pole vault, Fragoso, after finishing fifth last year, took home the state title by clearing 14 feet and 6 inches. In the boys 3200, Paul Kent was fourth and Daniel Ricks 12th after both running sub-10 marks. Devin McDaniel was second, Izzy Davidson sixth, in the girls pole vault. To close out the day’s finals, Sandpoint’s Isaac Schmit, Van Lee, Ryder Haynes, and Jett Longanecker finished third in the 1600 sprint medley relay.

In the preliminary rounds, both Ani Vick and Elia Howard punched their tickets to the finals in two events each. Vick was eighth in 100-meter hurdles, clinching the last finals spot with a time of 16.03 seconds, and finished third in 300-meter hurdles with a new personal best of 46.80 seconds. As for Howard, she was seventh in the 100-meter dash (12.83) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (26.34), setting new personal bests in both events.

Also giving it their all in the preliminary rounds were Lily Richardson, who was 10th in 400-meter dash (1:02.31), Longanecker, who finished 13th in the 400-meter dash (53.74), and Jess Herman, who was 14th in 300-meter hurdles (44.13).
