May 21, 1974 – CROWING ALARMIST

The alertness of Mrs. Peter F. Carter, who lives across from the Gene Hardy residence, 702 Sixth Ave., brought the Fire Dept. to snuff out a fire that started from an electric motor in Hardy’s workshop. While the fire was being contained to that building, its occupants, a Rhode Island rooster, his mate, and a guinea fowl, took refuge atop a pile of firewood by the shop. Now the rooster crows joyfully in the early mornings, no doubt giving thanks for being rescued. His hen is mute; the guinea fowl is unintelligible.

BILL HART’S NEIGHBORS PLOW HIS FIELDS

Friends and neighbors of M.D. “Bill” Hart, county commission chairman, who lives in the Selle district, gathered at his place Sunday with 12 tractors and within a short time 13 men had plowed, disked and harrowed 20 acres of his farm ready for sowing. While they were doing that, six neighbor ladies prepared a bountiful dinner for the working men. Mr. Hart has been in ill health this spring and for a time was in a critical condition in the hospital here. Hence he has been unable to put in his crop this spring.
