MOSCOW — Several local athletes shined at the Idaho Special Olympics Northern Summer Regionals held Saturday, May 18, at the University of Idaho.

Ashley Lengyel, Bob Leichtman and Jordan Bennett represented the Sandpoint Sharks swim team, and all had top finishes against athletes from Kootenai County, Moscow and the Silver Valley.

Lengyel won the 50-meter freestyle (53.75) and the 25-meter backstroke (27.18). Leichtman placed second in the 25-meter flotation (1:41) and second in the 15-meter walk (1:29). Bennett placed first in the 50-meter backstroke (58:69) and was the only athlete to compete in a 100-meter race, finishing first in the 100-meter freestyle (1:37.96).

“I am very proud of all three swimmers,” coach Meggie Foust said. “They really pushed themselves to compete in longer distances this year. Not only did they conquer their goals, they came out on top.”
