'Between Borders' travels into town at SOAC
It’s called “Between Borders: Folklife Through the Coeur d’Alenes” and it showcases vibrant traditions of folk artistry that reflects the rich and adaptable cultural heritage of our neighboring regions.
Bringing this extraordinary exhibit to the Sandpoint Organic Agricultural Center, 10881 N. Boyer, is a collaboration of Arts Idaho, National Endowment for the Arts, Bonner County Historical Society and Museum, and the Pend Oreille Arts Council.
The display is open to the public Saturday, Nov. 9, and Sunday, Nov. 10, from noon to 4 p.m. Besides being able to see artifacts including quilts, miniatures, musical instruments, traditional beaded work and much, much more, there will be demonstrations. Scheduled to show their time-honored skills are a forger, blacksmith, fishing fly tying expert, fabric weaver and basket weaver. Docents will be throughout the exhibit, and there will be music!
Two quilting organizations, Bosom Buddies and Panhandle Piecemakers will be exhibiting their craft. These contemporary quilts represent classical patterns in modern fabrics. Quilters will be on hand to answer questions. Of particular interest to some will be that they can provide information on how to properly clean and store homemade quilts.
“In celebrating the diversity of crafts, ‘Between Borders’ reveals the deep connections between art and everyday life. These works are not just decorative; they serve functional purposes and carry cultural significance, enriching the lives of those who create and use them,” the NEA poster says.
The POAC and Museum boards are excited to be a part of this excellent exhibition and hope to see many of you this weekend. For more information and details about the demonstrations and music performers, go to www.artinsandpoint.org/between-borders.
