NIC wrestling tops preseason NJCAA poll
The North Idaho College wrestling team has been named the No. 1 team in the nation in the National Junior College Athletic Association 2024-25 preseason poll.
The Cardinals, led by third-year head coach Derrick Booth, enter the season with a strong roster of returning talent and promising newcomers.
Caeden McLaimtaig, a 2024 Priest River High graduate who placed second and third at the 2A state championship at 152 pounds in 2023 and 2024, respectively, is one of those newcomers who could make an immediate impact for the Cardinals.
“We are honored and excited to be ranked No. 1 in the preseason,” Booth said. “It is a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment of our student-athletes, coaching staff and the entire NIC community. Our goal is to continue to build on this foundation and compete at the highest level throughout the season.”
NIC's wrestling program has been a powerhouse within the NJCAA, producing a handful of national champions and All-Americans throughout the years. The preseason ranking reflects the program's continued dominance and the high expectations for the upcoming season.
Elijah Cater (125), Conan Northwind (174) and Noah Poe-Hatten (184) are some of the returning athletes who were instrumental in the team’s success last season and are expected to lead the Cardinals once again.
“We have a strong mix of veteran leadership and new talent,” Booth said. “The commitment to excellence and the drive to improve every day is what makes this team so special. We’re excited for the challenges ahead and ready to compete for another national title.”
NIC’s next home match is against fifth-ranked Clackamas at 6 p.m. Nov. 23 in Christianson Gymnasium at NIC’s Coeur d’Alene campus.
