The reading proficiency of Idaho’s grade schoolers rose for a fourth consecutive year, according to data published Nov. 15 by the Idaho Department of Education. The results of the Fall 2024 Idaho Reading Indicator — a test taken twice each year by K-3 students across the state — showed literacy rates returning to pre-pandemic levels.

As a whole, 59.5% of Idaho’s public-school students were found to read at or above grade level. Lake Pend Oreille School District students slightly outpaced the state with 61.1% proficient; West Bonner County School District fell below the average with 51.1%.

Of Bonner County’s public schools, Sandpoint’s Washington Elementary ranked highest with 69.9% of students proficient. Oldtown’s Idaho Hill Elementary was lowest, with 45.7%.
