Primary elections: All inclusive

| November 26, 2024 1:00 AM

Let’s be honest the 2024 Proposition 1 was excessive. The old adage of KISS was out the window. It encompassed two separate voting issues which on legislation should never be allowed.

With that in mind, let’s consider a viable alternative that allows all registered Idahoans to vote in the primary. A ballot for Republicans, a ballot for Democrats (should they decide to participate) and a ballot for the other parties. By the way, while you are at it include a line and box for write-ins on both the primary and general elections.

Now for the primary process. A voter walks into the poll place, registered Republicans get a Republican ballot, Democrats get a Democrat ballot, all others have a choice, Republican, Democrat, or another party ballot. Non-party registered voters are not declaring party membership in this process.

This will allow all Idahoans the opportunity to vote in the primary process. It will not skew the numbers for this process and will make it fair for everyone. I believe the Idaho Legislature can accomplish this during the upcoming session and prior to the next primary election.
