AREA ROUNDUP: Sandpoint clashes with Moscow on senior night
VOLLEYBALL
Moscow 3, Sandpoint 0
SANDPOINT — The host Lady Bulldogs, on senior night, fell to the visiting Lady Bears in straight sets (23-25, 14-25, 20-25) at Les Rogers Court on Tuesday.
Sandpoint High head coach Piper Wahlin said she saw great play from her seniors, Audrey Petruso, Calie Bailey and Betti Travers.
Petruso, stepping into a new role, led the way with three aces and had a great setter-to-hitter connection with junior Hazel Pierce. Wahlin noted that Travers, playing as a six-rotation player, contributed on the both offensive and defensive sides of the ball, and that Bailey showed off some aggressive swings on the offensive end.
"I wish we could've gotten those seniors a win tonight, but I love the effort they put in and will miss each of them greatly," coach Wahlin said.
Sandpoint (0-11) hosts Lakeland on Oct. 8.
Coeur du Christ 3, Clark Fork 1
COEUR d’ALENE — At Holy Family Catholic School, the visiting Lady Cats fell in four sets to the Lady Saints (12-25, 23-25, 26-24, 13-25) in a nonleague match on Tuesday night.
Missing sophomore Nora-Jean Hoy, Clark Fork worked hard with an unfamiliar rotation, but played timid.
Clark Fork High head coach Lyndsie Kiebert-Carey said senior Kayla Swales served well, senior Olivia Yetter had some great serves and passing, and junior Aurora Lane mixed up the offense well with her sets.
"Overall, it was not our night," coach Kiebert-Carey said. "Shoutout to the Saints for some great stuff blocks. Their program is just going to keep getting better by the looks of it."
Clark Fork (2-10) travels to Mullan on Thursday.
BOYS GOLF
HAYDEN LAKE — In what was ultimately a determination of who would be the No. 5 golfer for Sandpoint High at the 5A District Championship, junior Everett Gilman shot a team-best 14-over-par 86 to lead the Bulldogs at an invitational hosted by Coeur d'Alene at the Avondale Golf Club on Tuesday.
Tyler Weisz carded a 91, Logan McGrann a 92, Landon Day a 105, and Landon Winslow a 114 for the Bulldogs, which placed fifth out of six scoring teams.
Sandpoint High head coach Mike Deprez said the team's top four, which he choose based on inter-squad and qualifying tournaments throughout the year, did not compete today and instead saved their energy for districts, which will be held for both boys and girls at The Links Golf Club in Post Falls on Thursday. In addition to Gilman, junior Logan Roos, junior Cooper Zimmerman, sophomore Bode Eacret and junior Micah Young will represent Sandpoint at the district tournament.
"Avondale is an extremely challenging golf course; the greens are very steep and there is a lot of out of bounds right and left," coach Deprez said. "For our top three, with those scores, they all played pretty well. I'm happy with all three of their performances and hope they'll all still be knocking on the door next year."
On the girls' side, Taylor Mire, Alexa Tuinstra, Demi Driggs, Claire Loutzenhiser, and Raegan Samuels, all seniors, are slated to represent the Lady Bulldogs at Thursday's district tournament.

COEUR d’ALENE — Freshman Sam Leaverton and junior Hope Barnes both scored unassisted goals as the Lady Bulldogs took down the host Lady Vikings on Tuesday at Coeur d'Alene High.
Leaverton started off the scoring in the first half on a cross shot the wind took in off the back post. In the second half, off a free kick by junior Ava Glahe, junior Mackenzie Mitchell struck the ball out of the air on a first time volley, which the Coeur d'Alene goalkeeper saved, and Barnes was able to clean up the deflection.
Senior Lilliana Brinkmeier had one save for Sandpoint.
"I think our girls combined really well out of the midfield," Sandpoint High head coach Alan Brinkmeier said. "I would say the player of the game was Cecilia (Dignan), she track-back saved us from about five one-on-ones on the defensive line."
Sandpoint (6-5-1) travels to Lakeland on Thursday for a league game that will determine some crucial district championship seeding.
Timberlake 9, Priest River 0
SPIRIT LAKE — Senior Kylee Swoboda had 18 saves as the visiting Lady Spartans fell to Lady Tigers at Timberlake High on Tuesday.

PULLMAN — Five Sandpoint Sharks, Andrew Ford (14 years old), Savannah (13) and Constance Ferris (10), Addy Tyler (14) and Brylee Garvin (13) swam a handful of fast times at the Cougar Fall Fury held this past weekend at Washington State University's Gibb Pool.
Savannah Ferris was the only girl to swim the 400-yard individual medley at the meet, finishing with a new personal best time of 6:30.61. Over the weekend, she also swam the 200 fly (3:07.29), 100 free (1:16.50), 200 free (2:46.69), 200 IM (3:15.44), 200 breast (3:52.89), 500 free (7:09.21), 200 back (2:59.38) and 100 fly (1:25.03).
Constance Ferris, at just 10 years old, swam nine races in two days: the 50 free (46.48), 100 breast (2:19.15), 100 IM (2:03.06), 100 back (1:59.63), 200 free (4:01.03), 100 free (1:42.42), 50 breast (1:01.11) and 50 back (53.05). Garvin competed in the 50 free (37.74), 50 fly (43.12), 100 back (1:40.48) and 200 free (3:14.21).
Assistant coach Sophie Britzmann, coaching her first meet with the Sandpoint Sharks, said all of her swimmers made necessary adjustments and swam to significant new personal bests.
“All around, the kids swam really well for the first meet of the season; all five of them swam best times," coach Britzmann said. "I was so excited for my first meet as an assistant coach and to watch the swimmers make progress and improvements in their swims. They pushed through the fatigue of having many back-to-back swims. I can’t wait for more swim meets and to see their progress and hard work unfold."
YOUTH TENNIS
After fielding a middle school tennis team for the past 20 years, with no other team to play against, Sandpoint will finally play in the first ever Idaho middle school tennis match Oct. 16 at Lewiston High. The match will start at 3 p.m. and end around 5 p.m. thanks to eight courts being available for the teams.
RIFLE/PISTOL CLUB
The Kootenai Valley Rifle and Pistol Club (KVRPC) is looking for interested individuals to join their team for the upcoming season.
The club, which is dedicated to the sport of smallbore rifle, air rifle, and pistol shooting, practices indoors with .22 caliber rifles and pistols from 50 feet. Senior rifle shooters, ages 21 and up, use a scoped rifle and shoot from prone, sitting, kneeling and standing positions while junior shooters, ages 12 to 20, learn Olympic style 3-position shooting with peep sights. Air rifles are for junior shooters and are shot in a standing position at 10 meters.
The senior and junior teams compete at their home range, the Kootenai Valley Gun Range, located on Highway 2 in Boundary County, and travel to Sandpoint, Coeur d’Alene, Spokane, and Missoula.
In the past, KVRPC shooters have won local and state matches, earned college scholarships, places at the Junior Olympics, and have produced nationally recognized NRA individuals and teams.
The club will hold an open house on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. to introduce interested individuals to the various shooting sports. From there on out, the pistol team meets on Tuesdays, starting Oct. 8, at 6 p.m., the senior rifle team meets on Wednesdays, starting Oct. 9, at 6:30 p.m., and the junior rifle team on Thursday’s, starting Oct. 10 at 6 p.m.
