COEUR d'ALENE — Senior Brady Newhart and junior Maverick Gomez combined for 202 receiving yards, but Sandpoint was limited to their lowest total yards of offense this season in a 20-14 loss to Lake City on Friday night at Van Troxel Field.

Lake City, which rushed 43 times for 283 yards, scored on their first drive of the game, going ahead 6-0 after a missed extra point. It wasn't until there was 12 seconds remaining in the second quarter that Sandpoint got on the board when junior Braden Buckhout connected with Gomez, who had a team-high 118 receiving yards, for a 75-yard score.

With Sandpoint leading 7-6 heading into the third quarter, Lake City responded with two back-to-back touchdowns, one on a 25-yard rush, the other on a 6-yard rush with 8:34 and 4:36 remaining in the quarter, respectively. Buckhout, who completed 15 of his 28 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns, coughed up a fumble in the second and then an interception in the fourth as Sandpoint's offense struggled to make plays in the second half.

During the last four minutes of the game, however, the Bulldogs were able to put together a 73-yard drive which resulted in Buckhout throwing a 6-yard score to senior Jesse Turner to bring Sandpoint within six points. With just 44 seconds remaining in the contest, the Bulldogs were unable to recover an onside kick and the Timberwolves secured their first victory over Sandpoint since 2020.

Senior Ashlei Hawkins was the Bulldogs' leading rusher, carrying the rock 13 times for 39 yards; he also hauled in two receptions for 22 yards. Newhart finished the game with a season-high 84 yards across five receptions. On defense, senior Wyatt Burnett had a sack on a 3rd down and nine on the Bulldogs' own 16-yard line in the first quarter, which prevented a potential score by Lake City.

Sandpoint put up 293 yards of total offense, 257 through the air and 36 on the ground. Lake City had 344 yards of total offense, 283 on the ground and 61 through the air.

Sandpoint (3-4) hosts Lewiston for homecoming on Friday.
