PREP FOOTBALL: Spartans break records in win over Colfax
PRIEST RIVER — At Priest River High, senior Sawyer Staudt rushed 31 times for 193 yards and four touchdowns, tying Brian Nelson for the most carries and touchdowns in a game, and the Spartans forced six turnovers, a school record, in a hard-fought 34-27 win over the visiting Bulldogs on Friday.
“If we continue to play with this kind of intensity and heart, I’m confident we’ll be making some serious noise as the season progresses,” Priest River High head coach Alex Zepeda said. “It was a hard-fought win, and our defense was outstanding.”
On defense, sophomore Kane Berns, junior Ian Lamanna and freshman Jacob Best all grabbed interceptions. Also hauling in interceptions were senior Luccas Simcox, who had two, and freshman Layton Goins, who returned his 47 yards for a touchdown. Goins also had a team-high seven tackles for the Spartans.
“Layton Goins came up big with a pick-six — he’s just a freshman, but he always seems to deliver when we need it most,” coach Zepeda said.
Junior Niki Porinchok added four tackles, including one for a loss, and a forced fumble. Fegert added three tackles and a sack.
In addition to Staudt’s big night on offense, junior Lucas Mathews completed 5 of his 10 passes for 54 yards and threw one interception. Sophomore Nate Fegert rushed nine times for 50 yards, Mathews three times for 31 yards. Lamanna caught four of Mathews’ five passes for 47 yards.
Priest River (3-2), which has won three straight games, hosts Orofino for homecoming Friday.
