There's no place for politics in storms, response

| October 10, 2024 1:00 AM

For the past several weeks we have watched with horror while the devastation and havoc visited on the southeastern United States by Helene and Milton have played out on the news. Thousands of our fellow Americans displaced, homes and businesses destroyed, infrastructure disrupted and dozens still missing.

Events like this should bring us together and have in most cases. Relief is being distributed and equipment and resources are arriving on scene from state, federal and non-governmental entities. It will take years for the devastated communities to heal and rebuild but it will be done because we’re together.

This is no time for politics. It is a time to forget labels and work for the common good. The saddest thing I've ever seen is a presidential candidate tossing chicken nuggets and hamburgers to a crowd and telling reporters that FEMA and other agencies were ignoring GOP areas of assistance and aid. This is disinformation completely without evidentiary support. It recalled that same individual tossing paper towels to the people of Puerto Rico after a hurricane. It was a photo-op pure and simple with no sympathy or concern for the citizens involved.

This person has no sense of compassion and must never again be president.
