PREP ROUNDUP: Bamer, Sandpoint swimming impresses at Kroc Center
Extended recap from Sunday's paper
SWIMMING
COEUR d'ALENE — Sandpoint High senior Ryleigh Bamer finished first out of 10 in the 100 butterfly with a time of one minute and three seconds to lead all area swimmers in a meet featuring Post Falls, Sandpoint, Skyline and Lewiston at the Kroc Center on Saturday.
"A great midseason performance from Ryleigh Bamer," Sandpoint High head coach Greg Jackson said. "This is the best I've ever seen her swim midseason. I'm excited to see what that means for her when we get to districts and state."
Jackson said he was also pleased with Annabelle Bunge, who was a part of a couple of relays and competed in the 50 freestyle.
"She really stepped up to help her team this weekend," coach Jackson said. "Due to illness, we ended up being a little short in a couple areas, and she stepped in to fill some holes. Great show of sportsmanship and team support from her."
Also for the girls, senior Ava de Leeuw placed second in the 200 freestyle, junior Mia Driggs third in both the 50 and 100 freestyle.
On the boys side, freshman Bodi Demmons and juniors McCoy Jensen, Kai Leavitt and Kale Wright won the 200 medley relay while Leavitt, Wright, freshman Lou Foust and senior Max Zuberbuhler won the 400 freestyle relay. Wright also won the 50 and 100 freestyle while Zuberbuhler swam to second in the 200 freestyle, Foust to second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 500 freestyle. Jensen added a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
"The team has done an amazing job, especially maintaining a positive attitude," coach Jackson said. "They have been working hard, and are tired — racing tired is part of our training program. They are not only trusting this training plan, but also embracing it. I believe this will transfer to successful performances once we get into our championship portion of the season."
Sandpoint will be back at the Kroc Center on Saturday for another invitational.
