Oct. 17, 1974 – INDIANS CLAIM VICTORY

Tribal manager Doug Wheaton of the Kootenai Indians of North Idaho said the tribe is “very pleased” about a bill signed by President Ford giving the 67-member tribe 12.5 acres of land. But he said that the land, located at the site of an old Catholic mission a few miles from Bonners Ferry, had been coming anyway but was hung up in Congress for three weeks. Wheaton said the tiny tribe’s “war” with the U.S., declared on Sept. 20, is still on and will remain so until the president signs a bill giving the tribe what it has demanded: that the U.S. return to the tribe 120,000 acres of ancestral lands in North Idaho. The “war” has been nonviolent; the only action taken by the tribe has been the erection of roadside information posts and collection of voluntary ten cent tolls. Idaho Senators Frank Church and James McClure have promised to introduce legislation in the next session of Congress calling for the establishment of a major reservation on land now controlled by the U.S. Forest Service.

LANDS BIG FISH

A 25-pound Kamloops was caught yesterday at the mouth of the Clark Fork River by John Pursley of Sandpoint, who was fishing with his son, Ted, and Merle Sampson, of Caldwell. John caught the whopper with a rebel plug on surface line. Sampson boated a 7-pound German Brown in the same outing, following a 14-pound Kamloops caught the day before. John Pursley, who is 89, and his son are well-known for consistently netting large fish.
