Prop 1 puts focus on what we have in common

| October 17, 2024 1:00 AM

Reading the opinion letters opposing Prop 1, I have to wonder; why is a moderate stance vilified?

Opponents of Prop 1 continue to rail about how damaging it would be to Republicans. In what way does the increasing polarization of our political parties help to build stability and a sense of community? Anything damaging to the far right OR the far left would, by default, help to build the middle. Prop 1 offers an opportunity for our political system to begin to move to a more centrist, middle ground.

Do you know what would make America great again? If friends and family weren't torn apart by even slightly differing political views. If the country were stable enough that we could focus on our neighbors rather than the spectacle of mayhem that is our national politics.

Do you remember when you could be friends with someone without ever knowing their political affiliation (or even caring if they had one)? We were all Americans. Sure, we disagree on some things, but I think we all have much more in common, much more that brings us together than divides us. When we fall into the tribal thinking of red or blue, that sense of community is torn apart. I believe that a centrist view reflects the true beliefs of most of the people of Idaho more than either extreme.

Prop 1 favors leaders who will be rewarded for putting the needs of those they represent above the desires of some entity whose agenda does nothing to improve the lives of Idahoans. I would personally like to have some say in every election where someone is running to represent me. Not the red me, not the blue me, the purple me, the American me.

Please vote yes on Prop 1. Let's focus on the things we have on common, rather than on the things that divide us.
