Ranked choice voting aims to disenfranchise voters

| October 24, 2024 1:00 AM

This letter is to encourage Bonner County citizens to vote no on Proposition 1.

According to The Washington Examiner (May 23, 2023), “The new election fad sweeping the Left is ranked choice voting. Instead of picking one candidate, voters rank candidates as the first, second, third choice, and so on.

If no candidate gets 50% according to voters' first choice, then voters' second choice is taken into account to decide the winner. For example, pretend one candidate receives 42% of the vote, another gets 41%, and a third candidate gets the rest. No one reaches 50%-plus one according to voters' first choice. So the third candidate's votes are thrown out. It is a confusing system designed to help some politicians at the expense of others.” (See also  washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/editorials/74825/ranked-choice-voting-is-a-mistake)

The very purpose is to create confusion and disenfranchisement of the traditional method of selecting the top candidates from all political parties to run against each other in the general election.

Several years ago the state of Alaska implemented this method; now voters there can't wait to vote it out due to its disastrous consequences.

Idaho deserves a system that actually reflects the will of its fine people. Vote no on Proposition 1 on Nov.5.
