Sept. 3, 1974 – WINS SEWING MACHINE

As first place winner in the National Grange Sewing Contest, Mrs. Dale [Elsie] Barton, Pack River Grange, won a Singer Futura 900 sewing machine from the Singer Sewing Machine Co. It was presented to her by Ron Hanson, owner of Nelson TV & Appliance. Jerry Payton, Singer serviceman for Nelson’s, showed her how to operate it.

PROUDLY WE SALUTE…

Air Force Staff Sergeant Chester D. Rears, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Staael, 926 Church, a supply systems specialist, is assigned to Newark Air Force Station, Ohio, for duty with the Air Force Logistics Command. Sgt. Rears, a 1960 SHS graduate, has a degree in computer science from Boise State. 

Navy Seaman Recruit Tim Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd M. Wilson, 1402 Cedar, graduated recruit training at the Naval Training Ctr., San Diego, and will report to Communications School, Pensacola. 

Army Private Andrew G. Carnegie, Jr., 18, whose father, Andrew Carnegie, Sr., lives in Sandpoint, is currently with the 1st Signal Group, Ft. Lewis, Wash., under the Army’s Unit of Choice program. He is a tactical circuit controller in the 176th Signal Co., guaranteed at least 12 to 16 months duty.  Pvt. Carnegie’s wife, Tamara, is with him in Washington. His mother, Mrs. Marie Klink, resides in Chewelah. 

Army Private Francis Compton, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Compton, Clark Fork, completed a 33-week ground control approach radar repairman class at U.S. Army Signal School, Ft. Monmouth, N.J.

Sept. 3, 1949 – THE CHANGING SCENE

A coat of cream color paint on the aluminum siding on the J.C. Penney store’s west side has eliminated the late-afternoon reflected glare that was a hazard to motorists driving east on Cedar.

Stretched across First Avenue from Jennestad’s corner [First and Main] to the Panida theater is a big banner depicting farm animals and announcing in large letters the coming county fair.

Painters started work Wednesday on the new Richfield service station that is rapidly approaching completion at the corner of Lake and First.

CPL. FRANK SEARFUS IN SERVICE SCHOOL

Cpl. Frank Searfus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Searfus, rte. 2, Sandpoint, serving with the army of occupation in Germany, graduated from a six-week course at the quartermaster school at Darmstadt, Germany. Searfus, who has been in the army for four years, has been overseas since March, 1946.

POLICE DEPT. TO GIVE DRIVING LESSONS

Officer George Elliott left Sunday for Seattle to attend a week-long school on teaching driving classes. Officer Elliott will teach driving to high school students this season in a new setup sponsored by the city, high school, and Cady and Pier, who are furnishing the dual-drive instruction car, as well as servicing it for the school year.
