GIRLS SOCCER

Sandpoint 3, Coeur d’Alene 0

SANDPOINT — At War Memorial Field, senior Marlee McCrum had two goals and an assist and the host Lady Bulldogs scored three goals in the second half to take down the 6A Lady Vikings on Thursday — Sandpoint’s senior night.

After a scoreless first half, freshman Sam Leaverton found the back of the net early in the second, dribbling 20 yards upfield and taking a shot from just inside the box — a shot that sailed just over the goalkeeper's head. With three minutes remaining, McCrum scored after a scrum in front of the net. Leaverton had passed a ball in front, junior Hope Barnes took a shot which was deflected, and McCrum was there to clean up the mess. In stoppage time, McCrum would strike again, this time from the right side of the box.

Senior Lilliana Brinkmeier notched another shutout between the posts with six saves on the night.

“I think the girls came out here and played for the seniors, played for each other,” Sandpoint High head coach Alan Brinkmeier said. “They were a little emotional at half and they just came out on fire. With the ambition we didn’t have in our last game, they showed it here. Our seniors did especially well tonight.”

McCrum, Brinkmeier, Maddie Mitchell and Ayla Hull were all honored at halftime for their career contributions.

Sandpoint (2-1-1) hosts 5A Inland Empire League foe Lakeland on Tuesday.

PRIEST RIVER — The visiting Lady Tigers defeated the host Lady Spartans by a nine-goal margin in a 4A/3A showdown held Thursday at Priest River High.

Senior Lizzie McCracken scored the lone goal for Priest River in the second half off of a penalty kick. Senior goalkeeper Kylee Swoboda managed an impressive 18 saves in her first start of the season.

Priest River (0-2) will travel to Grangeville on Saturday for a 3A Central Idaho League match.

Bulldogs fall to Viks

Coeur d’Alene 4, Sandpoint 1

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Luke Leavitt scored during the first half, but Sandpoint couldn’t keep up with the host Vikings, who scored two goals in both halves to seal a three-goal victory at Coeur d’Alene High on Thursday.

Leavitt scored during the 25th minute off of a great through ball from freshman phenom Pax Longanecker. Senior Kason Pintler scored two goals in the first half for the Vikings, who had 17 shots, 11 of which were on goal. Senior goalkeeper Gavan Miles had seven saves to keep Sandpoint, who had 11 shots on the day, four of which were on goal, in the contest.

“I would say the score line isn’t representative of how close of a game it was; it was very back and forth — a battle,” Sandpoint High head coach Dan Anderson said. “We struggled to take advantage of our chances while they very much did take advantage of theirs. That being said, Gavan Miles had another great game to keep us in it.”

Coach Anderson said the team’s focus was below the standard they have set for themselves, but it served as a good reality check as Sandpoint (2-1-1) will quickly turn around and travel to Vallivue on Saturday for a noon match.

“It isn’t such a bad thing if we’re learning from it, we move forward, and continue to improve, and I’m confident that’s what we’ll do,” coach Anderson said.

1st half — 1, CDA, Kason Pintler, 10’. 2, SPT, Luke Leavitt (Pax Longanecker), 25’. 3, CDA Kason Pintler, 30’. 2nd half — 4, CDA, Keaton Gust, 46’. 5, CDA, Jacob Shaporda, 75’.

Shots on goal: SPT — 4. CDA — 11.

Saves: SPT — Gavan Miles 7. CDA — Grant Johnson 3.

Spartans extend winning streak

Priest River 3, Timberlake 0

PRIEST RIVER — At Priest River High, senior Connor Stevens scored two second half goals and the Spartans defeated 4A Timberlake for the first time since 2016 in a non-league match on Thursday.

Midway through the first half, senior Cameron Howell scored first for Priest River from roughly 30 yards out. Stevens scored insurance goals during the 42nd and 63rd minutes to lift the Spartans to victory. Junior goalkeeper Baylor White had eight saves on the night.

“I am delighted for our young men; it was a fantastic team performance tonight against a well coached and skillful Timberlake team,” Priest River High head coach Ryan Carruth said. “We played 19 of our amazing student-athletes tonight with not a single bad performance. That is truly remarkable and speaks to our depth and ‘next man up’ philosophy.”

Priest River (3-0) will travel to Grangeville on Saturday for a 3A Central Idaho League match.

1st half — 1, PR, Cameron Howell, 20’. 2nd half — 2, PR, Connor Stevens, 42’. 3, PR, Connor Stevens, 63’.

“Audrey showed a lot of focus and discipline on serve receive and defense,” coach Wahlin said. “Calie hustled to put up good sets for her attackers despite rolling her ankle.”
