PREP ROUNDUP: Lady Spartans volleyball stays hot with sweep of Newport

PRIEST RIVER — At Priest River High, sophomore Raygn Turner had a team-high nine kills and contributed six digs, junior Jayda Storro a game-high five aces and 13 assists, and the Lady Spartans swept cross-border rival Newport (25-23, 25-23, 25-8) on Saturday to push their winning streak to three games.

The visiting Grizzlies, down as much as seven points in the second set, rallied to take a 22-20 lead, but Priest River pulled out their second consecutive 25-23 set win to gain a 2-0 edge. The Lady Spartans dominated the entire way in the third set, taking it by 17 points, their largest set win this year.

“Our team decided to pick it up competitively at the end when it mattered most,” Priest River High head coach Katlyn Ward said. “The girls just kept their heads up the whole game.”

On defense, junior Toni Marinello had a team-high 10 digs while junior Aleigha Jensen and senior Desi Humphrey had one block each.

Priest River (3-0) hosts Riverside on Monday.

Sandpoint takes two at Judy Fong

LEWISTON — The Lady Bulldogs picked up their first tournament wins of the season, defeating Logos (25-22, 25-22) and Timberline (25-17, 25-9) at the Judy Fong Memorial Tournament held Saturday at Lewiston High.

With the two wins, which included a loss to Troy (22-25, 11-25), Sandpoint reached the gold bracket but was outed by Lewiston (13-25, 19-25) after the first round. Senior Audrey Petruso totaled 32 digs and was the team’s leading serve receiver. Junior Hazel Pierce had a team-high 18 kills on the day.

“Her timing and power clicked and she had some amazing swings,” Sandpoint High head coach Piper Wahlin said of Pierce. “We did some positive things; it’s always good to get some wins.”

Sandpoint (0-5) hosts Lake City on Tuesday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Lamanna continues to perform well

ATHOL — After breaking the school record last week, Priest River High senior Brayden Lamanna led all area runners at the Timberlake-Farragut Invitational held Saturday, finishing 20th out of 223 runners with a 5,000-meter time of 16 minutes and 48 seconds.

Sophomore Jack Lovin finished 54th with a time of 17 minutes and 39 seconds for Sandpoint, which finished 16th out of 30 scoring teams. On the girls’ side, Sandpoint High sophomore Sienna Todd-Murray finished 77th out of 168 runners with a time of 22 minutes and 50 seconds to lead the Lady Bulldogs, which placed 17th out of 25 scoring teams.

Sandpoint returns to action on Sept. 21 at the Thompson Falls Invite. Priest River will head to the Bonners Ferry Invite on Sept. 14.

Bulldogs come up just short

Vallivue 4, Sandpoint 3

VALLIVUE — At Vallivue High on Saturday, three different players scored for Sandpoint, which fell 4-3 in a non-league match to the Falcons, who have 14 seniors on their roster.

In a game that saw temperatures reach the mid-90’s and was a bit smokey, the Bulldogs went into halftime trailing 2-1 after junior Huxley Hall sunk a penalty kick during the 29th minute. Sandpoint High head coach Dan Anderson said the team went into halftime, regrouped, and changed some things around. 

In the second half, senior Bridger Cudmore sent a through ball to senior Luke Leavitt who scored after a one-on-one with the Falcons’ goalkeeper. Sandpoint conceded two more goals in the 50th and 52nd minute before junior Asher Hazen was able to score a header, assisted by Knox Williams, during the 76th minute.

“Overall I’m happy with the performance,” coach Dan Anderson said. “We played a very fast and skillful team and I’m glad we had the opportunity to get a longer road trip under our belts. Once the boys realized they could hang with them, they responded well and I’m pleased with the grit the boys showed today.”

Sandpoint (2-2-1) travels to Lakeland on Tuesday.

GRANGEVILLE — At Grangeville High, the host Bulldogs defeated the visiting Spartans in a 3A Central Idaho League match. 

Junior goalkeeper Baylor White had 14 saves for Priest River (3-1) who hosts Bonners Ferry on Friday.

GRANGEVILLE — Senior Lizzie McCracken scored the Lady Spartans’ lone goal, her fourth in three games ,and Priest River fell by three goals in a 3A Central Idaho League Match held Saturday at Grangeville High.

McCracken and fellow senior Clara Kennedy said the girls fought hard, but weren’t as consistent in their defensive and offensive gameplans as usual. The two said they expect Priest River to take home a win in their next match against the Bulldogs on Sept. 28 at home.

Priest River (0-3) hosts Bonners Ferry on Friday.

Sandpoint boys second in season-opener

MOSCOW — Freshman Lou Foust and juniors Kai Leavitt, McCoy Jensen and Kale Wright took home gold in the 200 freestyle relay and the Bulldogs took second as a team, defeating two 6A schools and all their league opponents in the process, at the IEL Icebreaker Invitational held Saturday at the University of Idaho.

On the girls' side, Sandpoint was third as sophomore Reina Montecchi won the 50 freestyle and senior Ava de Leeuw the 500 freestyle.

Sandpoint will be back in action Sept. 14 at the Kroc Center for a meet hosted by Post Falls.

Staudt impressive in season-opener

Grangeville 36, Priest River 8

GRANGEVILLE — Senior Sawyer Staudt carried the pigskin 25 times for 136 yards and a touchdown as Priest River fell to the host Bulldogs on Friday night.

“Grangeville is a really good football team,” Priest River High head coach Alex Zepeda said. “The boys played really well through the first three quarters, but unfortunately we got gassed at the end.”

On defense, junior Gavin Griesemer had six tackles, including one for a loss. Sophomore Colton Kuprienko had eight tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Freshman Layton Goins added six tackles for Priest River (0-1) which travels to Newport on Friday.
