LEWISTON — Senior Luke Leavitt scored during the 35th minute, assisted by junior Huxley Hall, but the host Bengals scored in the second half to notch a tie during an Inland Empire League match held Saturday at Lewiston High.

Sandpoint High head coach Dan Anderson said the Bulldogs started slow and struggled to convert chances, which allowed Lewiston, which is now 1-5-2 on the season, to hang around and tie the game.

“This was our fifth away game in a row and it was evident based on our energy levels and execution,” coach Anderson said. “I am looking forward to seeing a complete performance from our boys, because the potential is there, but the focus is lacking.”

Sandpoint had 16 shots compared to Lewiston’s four.

Sandpoint (3-3-2) will travel to Post Falls Tuesday.

1st half — 1, SPT, Luke Leavitt (Huxley Hall), 35’. 2nd half — 2, LEW, #23, 68’.

Noxon 3, Clark Fork 0

CLARK FORK — At Clark Fork High, the Lady Cats were defeated by cross-border rival Noxon in straight sets (23-25, 12-25, 20-25) on Saturday.

With junior Aurora Lane absent from the lineup, sophomore Nora-Jean Hoy stepped in as setter and dished out 13 assists. Junior Piper Scarlett added four kills and six aces for Clark Fork.

“When our passing was on, we were clicking well… Once again, it came down to serve receive,” Clark Fork High head coach Lyndsie Kiebert-Carey said. “We’ll be working to dial that in for some important matches next week.”

Clark Fork (1-6, 0-3) will travel to Kootenai Tuesday.

FOOTBALL

Newport 20, Priest River 12

NEWPORT — At Newport High, the host Grizzlies were able to score 13 unanswered points late in the fourth quarter to take home an 8-point victory over the Spartans on Friday.

Senior Sawyer Staudt, who carried the ball 20 times for 120 yards in the contest, scored touchdowns in both the first and second quarters as Priest River jumped out to an early 12-0 lead.

Newport’s Hank Kikrwood, who rushed 21 times for 74 yards and was 10-for-19 passing for 87 yards, had three touchdowns, one in the second quarter and two in the fourth to lift the Grizzlies to victory.

Freshman Layton Goins hauled in an interception for the Spartans near the end of the first quarter, which set up one of Staudt’s touchdowns. Goins, Brady Hatten and Gavin Griesemer all had 11 tackles each.

“Newport has outscored us 246-36 over the past decade, and we haven’t beaten them in over 10 years,” Priest River High head coach Alex Zepeda said. “To have it come down to the wire against such a solid team is definitely a step in the right direction for our program. Now, we just need to focus on finishing strong in future games.”

Priest River (0-2) hosts Kettle Falls for their home opener Friday.
