COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Thompson, McLain record collegiate firsts
Cheyenne Thompson, College of the Siskiyous Soccer
Cheyenne, a 2024 Priest River High graduate, recorded her first collegiate assist for the Eagles during the 84th minute of 7-1 win over Gavilan. Cheyenne has seen playing time in three games so far this season for the College of the Siskiyous, which was 5-0-1 at the time of publication. The Eagles traveled to Yuba College Tuesday and will play them again this Friday at home.
Emma Lucas, Big Bend CC Volleyball
Across four games at the Edmonds College NWAC Volleyball Crossover held Sept. 13-14 at Seaview Gym, Emma, a 2023 Bonners Ferry High graduate, recorded 104 assists, 25 digs, two blocks and two kills for the Vikings. In a 3-0 win over Olympic, Emma dished out a career-best 40 assists. She now has 342 assists on the season, which moves her up to seventh in the entire NWAC. Big Bend (7-8) travels to Treasure Valley on Thursday.
Evelynn Chaney, Lewis-Clark State College Cheer
A 2023 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Evelynn was the first cheer team commit in Warrior history, announced Sept. 12 by the Lewis-Clark State College Athletics Department.
"Evelynn has been an amazing leader so far this year," head coach Sydnee Soderberg, who will lead the program in its inaugural year, said. "I appreciate the experience she gained with dance last year and I am so excited for her to thrive in cheerleading this year."
Evelynn competed last year for the Warrior Dance team, their first year in existence. As a Badger, she helped lead the cheer team to a first place finish in show and stunt at districts and second in pom.
Braylyn Bayer, Weber State Golf
Making her collegiate debut, Braylyn, a 2024 Bonners Ferry High graduate shot a 13-over-par across two rounds for the Wildcats, which finished second out of 11 teams at the Kelsey Chugg Invitational held Sept. 16-17 at Wolf Creek Golf Course in Eden, Utah. Braylyn, playing as an independent, was seventh for Weber State and finished tied for 29th overall out of 69 golfers. She registered four birdies, three of which came on the back nine holes during the second round. Weber State will compete next at the Eastern Washington's Eagle Invitational, set to be held Sept. 22-23 at the Circling Raven Golf Course in Worley.
Avery Bayer, Idaho State Golf
Facing off against her twin sister, Avery, a 2024 Bonners Ferry High graduate, tied for 56th at the Kelsey Chugg Invitational. She shot a 22-over-par across two rounds and finished fifth for the Bengals, which placed 11th as a team at the invitational. Avery holed three birdies in total, two of which came on the back nine holes during the first round. Idaho will also compete at Eastern Washington's Eagle Invitational this upcoming weekend.
Matyus McLain, University of Idaho Football
In the Vandals' 41-13 home-opening win over the University of Albany, Matyus, a 2023 Priest River High graduate, recorded his first collegiate tackle, a sack for a 1-yard loss during a second down and 10 on the Great Danes' first drive of the fourth quarter. The University of Idaho (2-1) travels to Abilene Christian this Saturday.
Brandon Casey, University of Montana Football
A 2020 Sandpoint High graduate, Brandon made his 33rd career start for Grizzlies on the offensive line this past Friday as Montana rolled past Morehead State 59-2 at home. He helped the Griz to 36 first downs, 410 yards rushing (only the third time Montana rushed for 400-plus yards since 1991) and 166 yards passing. The University of Montana (2-1) hosts Western Carolina this Saturday.
Connor Alexander, Lewis-Clark State College Cross Country
At the Washington State Cougar Classic held Sept. 13 at Colfax Golf Course and Country Club, Connor, a 2022 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, ran a career-best 8,000-meter time of 25 minutes and 44 seconds (5:10/mi) to finish 85th out of 171 runners, most of which were from NCAA Division 1 schools like WSU, Boise State, Gonzaga and Arizona, etc. Connor was the fifth runner for the Warriors, who finished 10th and travel to University of Missouri for the Gans Creek Classic on Sept. 27.
Abigail Shumaker, Lewis-Clark State College Cross Country
A 2020 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Abigail ran a career-best 6,000-meter time of 23 minutes and 26 seconds (6:17/mi) at the Cougar Classic. Abigail, who was over a minute faster than her time last year at this event, finished 102nd overall and third for the Warriors, which were 12th out of 13 scoring teams.
Camille Ussher, Lewis-Clark State College Cross Country
Camille, a 2022 Bonners Ferry High graduate, finished the Cougar Classic with a career-best 6,000-meter time of 23 minutes and 44 seconds (6:22/mi). Camille was the fifth finisher for the Warriors, who are now ranked 18th in the NAIA.
