PREP ROUNDUP: Sandpoint girls soccer rebounds with 5-0 win over Post Falls
GIRLS SOCCER
Sandpoint 5, Post Falls 0
SANDPOINT — Junior Mackenzie Mitchell scored the first and last goals of the game and tallied an assist as the host Lady Bulldogs ran past the visiting Lady Trojans for a 5-0 5A Inland Empire League win at War Memorial Field on Tuesday.
Mitchell's first goal came during the 13th minute off a corner kick taken by junior Ava Glahe. One minute later, freshman Sam Leaverton received a pass inside the box from senior Marlee McCrum and scored to extend the lead to 2-0.
In the second half, sophomore Jordyn Tomco netted her first career goal, assisted by junior Elia Howard, right under the middle of the top of the crossbar. Howard then scored during the 70th minute off an assist from Mitchell, and Mitchell, scored again during the 75th minute off a pass from senior Maddie Mitchell to give the Lady Bulldogs a 5-0 lead.
"We were working on possession and building from the back for a solid hour and a half yesterday — working the midfield, playing backwards, going back into the midfield — I feel like they took that to heart and took advantage of that in this type of game," Sandpoint High head coach Alan Brinkmeier said. "A lot of the goals we scored were from building out of our center back, to midfield, to outside back, and then working our way up the field and finishing off crosses. Our girls are coming alive and putting their bodies on the line to put the ball in the back of the net, and I'm happy to see that."
Sandpoint (5-2-1) travels to Boise on Monday to take on Owyhee, last year's 6A state champions.

McCracken continues scoring streak for Lady Spartans
Bonners Ferry 7, Priest River 3
BONNERS FERRY — Sophomore Macie Olmo scored in the first half (33’), senior Lizzie McCracken found the back of the net twice in the second half (43’, 58’), and the visiting Lady Spartans fell to the host Lady Badgers in a league match held Monday at Bonners Ferry High.
Senior goalkeeper Kylee Swoboda had eight saves between the posts. Priest River High assistant coach Nick Tucker said Swoboda and the whole team are showing some real growth.
“The girls played much better after we got through the first ten minutes,” coach Tucker said. “If we could figure out how to start games like we finish them, we could really see some competitive games and get some wins under our belt. We made an adjustment at halftime that made us play much more disciplined in the second half.”
Priest River (0-5) travels to Newport on Thursday.

Leavitt nets hat trick
Sandpoint 5, Post Falls 0
POST FALLS — At Post Falls High, senior Luke Leavitt scored one goal in the first half, two in the second, and the visiting Bulldogs got back on track with a big 5A Inland Empire League win over the host Trojans on Tuesday.
Junior Huxley Hall started off the scoring during the ninth minute, knocking in a rebound off of Post Falls' goalkeeper. During the 18th minute, Hall sent a nice through ball to Leavitt for the game's second goal.
In the second half, freshman Pax Longanecker scored his first career goal during the 60th minute, assisted by junior Caiden Gion, after a great driving run which ended in Longanecker lacing a ball off the bottom of the left post and in. Leavitt then scored again two minutes later, assisted by freshman Colton Dickinson — the first assist of his career. Leavitt then capped off the hat trick in the 66th minute after a nice hustle play where he stole the ball from the opposing goalkeeper.
Sandpoint High head coach Dan Anderson said it was a great team performance.
"The coaching staff challenged the boys to come out and put together a resounding league victory tonight and that's exactly what they did," coach Anderson said. "We were down five starters, for various reasons, so getting this win was something that were very proud of and that we needed for confidence and for a reward for all the hard work the boys have been putting in on the field and in the classroom."

BONNERS FERRY — Junior goalkeeper Baylor White had 14 saves as the visiting Spartans fell to the host Badgers on Monday at Bonners Ferry High.
"We dug ourselves an early hole by conceding four early goals," Priest River High head coach Ryan Carruth said. "That's always going to be a very difficult hole to climb out of against a team like Bonners Ferry. It was good to see a positive response at halftime and a more competitive second half. Hopefully, our guys learned a tough lesson about the importance of starting on the front foot and competing from the first whistle to the last."
